Change Coming in Japan

NOW, THE ISLAND COUNTRY OF JAPAN HAS A SIMILAR GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE TO ENGLAND’S, WITH A CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY. BUT RATHER THAN BEING CALLED A KING, THEIR LEADER IS REFERRED TO AS AN EMPEROR.

IT WAS RECENTLY ANNOUNCED BY THE COUNTRY’S PRIME MINISTER THAT EMPEROR AKIHITO WILL ABDICATE THE THRONE ON APRIL 30, 2019.

ABDICATE MEANS TO STEP DOWN FROM THE POSITION AS LEADER IN A COUNTRY. AKIHITO WILL BE THE FIRST TO STEP DOWN FROM THE JAPANESE MONARCHY IN THE PAST 200 YEARS. THE 83-YEAR-OLD HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS.

TAKING HIS PLACE WILL BE CROWN PRINCE NARUHITO, WHO HAS ALREADY TAKEN ON SOME OF HIS FATHER'S DUTIES. NARUHITO WILL THUS BECOME THE 126TH EMPEROR TO ASCEND TO JAPAN'S CHRYSANTHEMUM THRONE.
