WVIZ/PBS ideastream’s Community Engagement and Education Department provides a wide array of Professional Learning opportunities to thousands of educators in over 200 school districts in an eleven county area in Northeast Ohio. Our technology training services can be tailored to a district’s needs from novice to the scholar and can be provided in the teaching labs of WVIZ/PBS ideastream, in your school district, or via Distance Learning. We provide the availability of graduate credit for workshops that meet university requirements.

The Amazing Technology Race (One-Day Option)

To participate you must register as a team of two to four people.

Winning team receives a technology race kit; two iPads* and two Handheld GPS’s.

Description:  Each team will either bring an iPad or receive an iPad and borrow a Garmin eTrext Venture HC GPS.  Learn the basic and advanced functions of each device.  Armed with these technology tools, you will race around South Bass Island on golf carts and complete a series of technology challenges by taking pictures, creating videos and using other apps.  Share your findings and spend time collaborating and creating lessons.  All teams receive prizes. A wonderful technology team building session!

To participate, you must enroll 8-16 staff members divided into teams of two to four.

Description:

Day 1 Each team will either bring an iPad or receive an iPad and borrow a Garmin eTrext Venture HC GPS.  Learn the basic and advanced functions of each device.  Armed with these technology tools, you will race around South Bass Island on golf carts and complete a series of technology challenges; take pictures, create videos, upload information to Google Docs, create a slide presentations, and much, more.  All teams will earn points towards a technology race kit depending upon how they place.  

Day 2 Share your findings from the previous day and spend time collaborating and creating lessons.  Present your lesson in front of a panel of experts (middle school students).  The experts will score your lesson and you will earn points towards a technology race kit of two iPads* and two handheld GPS’s.  Combined highest scores from both days will win that team the technology race kit.  All teams receive prizes.

Classroom Makerspace Day

Description: K-8 teachers are invited to spend a day learning how to transform their classrooms into a makerspace using existing materials. Each person will receive a starter kit of materials and resources that can be used in the classroom the very next day.  Receive step-by-step information on how to design, equip, and successfully operate a safe and inspirational space.  Tour TechCentral MakerSpace at the nearby Cleveland Public Library.  Envision how a classroom can be transformed with a Cutting Machine, 3-D Printer, Laser Engraver, Photography and Graphic Design, Music and Recording and much more.  A great workshop for teachers who are serious about designing a space to facilitate teaching and learning with research, creativity and hands-on learning.

Cleveland on $40 A Day

Description:  Bring a tablet to the Idea Center at PlayhouseSquare® and learn about dozens of apps that will connect you with the wonders of history and Cleveland.  We’ll give you $40 and together we will explore downtown Cleveland on a mini scavenger hunt using your device. We will visit and or see the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, the new Public Square with its 10-acre green space, the Historic Cleveland Public Library, the Federal Reserve, Old Stone Church, the West Side Market, Progressive Field, Quicken Loans Arena, PlayhouseSquare, The Idea Center, Terminal Tower and more.   In addition we will show you how to spend wisely at a breakfast hot spot.  Eat lunch at the historic rotunda of downtown Cleveland Heinens, and enjoy an affordable dinner.  Eat, play and learn all for $40 a day.

Engaging Your Students with Augmented and Virtual Realities

Description: Bring your tablets that have a camera and are enabled to download apps.  Then discover how you can entice your students with augmented and virtual realities.  Receive an understanding about VR and AR and what the differences are, as well as explore the possibilities what VR, AR and 360 degrees video offer as a learning tool.  Help students to understand complex and hard-to-understand concepts. Learn about dozens of apps along with some simple manipulatives that will bring science, math and other subject areas to life.  Discover what elementary, middle, high and even college students are doing with these realities.

Getting Started with MakerSpace & Coding

Description:  Teachers in grades 4-12 are invited to register as a pair and learn how to supplement their lessons with design and coding.  Each pair of teachers will receive two 3D Pens with extra filament, one Makey Makey invention kit, two Worlds of Making…books, one Arduino Starter Kit, and one Getting Started with Arduino book. Receive step-by-step information on how to use each device.  See how to easily design lessons. Bring a laptop with a USB port or borrow one of ours.  Come ready to play and learn.  A great workshop for teachers who are serious about integrating MakerSpace and Coding into teaching and learning.

Using Drones in Education

Description:  Receive a ‘DBPOWER MJX X400W FPV Drone with Wi-Fi Camera Live’ and learn the rules and regulations about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), including how to register your device with the FAA.  Discover ways to integrate your drone into teaching and learning; survey a physical education activity, take great aerial shots or video for your art or media arts program, expose students to unreachable wonders of nature near your school building, and much more.  Imagine having a ‘Drone Day’ in which students earn the right to operate the drone to learn the mathematics behind a flight plan. Scratch Jr. for Early Learners

Description: Learning fundamental computer programming skills has never been easier than when using PBS Kids Scratch Jr. With the help of PBS Kids characters, children as young as 5-years old can learn to snap colorful programming blocks together in order to tell stories and express themselves in a digital environment. Creating interactive stories where characters move, talk, dance, jump, and sing opens the door to the endless possibilities available with this creative coding app. When using PBS Kids Scratch Jr., children don’t just learn to code; they code to learn.
