20 year Master Plan for Burke Lakefront Airport

A flight carrying the St. Louis Cardinals departs Burke Lakefront Airport - May 14, 2015

Airport officials displayed their new 20 year Master Plan for Burke Lakefront Airport yesterday.  It includes plans to move a runway and build additional aircraft hangars. Ideastream’s Annie Wu reports.

Some 65,000 airplanes take-off and land from Burke Lakefront airport every year.  Some are small personal single engine airplanes.  Some are air ambulances bringing patients to the Cleveland Clinic.  And some are 757 jets carrying the St. Louis Cardinals.

Though the airport is operating below capacity and projected growth is minimal, Ren Camacho with the Cleveland Airport System says there is demand for more hangars and a new terminal.

CAMACHO: We have a lot of flight schools.  Dot com entities that do a lot of business here.  The sports charters, the sports teams that come and play against the Cleveland teams all still continue to fly in and out.  (0:11)

New hangars and ramp space will be built as private businesses agree to funding them.  So far, Landmark Aviation is the only company committed to build at Burke.  They’re expected to break ground soon on a new executive terminal.  And airport officials hope that will be a catalyst for more development and more traffic at the lakefront airport over the next two decades.
