County Council Considering Fixes For Cleveland Public Transit

A Cuyahoga County council committee met Thursday, as it wraps up recommendations on how to fix the region’s public transit system and a sales tax increase may be among their recommendations.

When the county’s Regional Transportation Advisory Subcommittee holds its final meeting in two weeks, there will be recommendations for the future of the region’s public transit system. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transportation Authority is struggling to close an $18 million deficit in its 2018 budget, on top of recent fare increases and service reductions.

The transportation subcommittee’s final recommendations may include a request for some of the state’s $2 billion Rainy Day Fund, and more lobbying efforts. But first on its list of possible solutions: an increase to the county’s sales tax.

Cuyahoga County’s current rate is 8 percent, the highest in Ohio. The recommendations will go to the Committee of the Whole for consideration by the full council.
