2015 Cleveland Arts Prize; Board Games; Pinball; African-American Culture Garden

In a few weeks, the 55 th annual Cleveland Arts Prize ceremony takes place, recognizing the 2015 award winners. Honorees include painter Julian Stanczak,  concert- promoting brothers Mike and Jules Belkin, painter Michelangelo Lovelace, artist and urban planner William Gould, visual artist Gianna Commito, writer Mary Weems, dancer Felise Bagley and musician H. Leslie Adams. On this episode of Applause, we speak with Arts Prize Executive Director Alenka Banco.

There are two recently opened businesses in Northeast Ohio that feature board games: The Side Quest in Lakewood, and Malted Meeple in Hudson. A third, Tabletop Board Game Café, is slated to open later this month in Ohio City. In our ongoing series Applause America we report on an establishment in Columbus, Ohio called Kingmakers that’s also banking on the popularity of board games to make their business a success.

Another game that’s seen its share of ups and downs in terms of popularity is pinball. Once video games arrived on the scene, many thought pinball machines would end up on the scrap heap of history. But thanks to a group of passionate players here in Northeast Ohio, folks are starting to flip out again at places like the Superelectric Pinball Parloron West 78th Street, Kid-force Collectibles in Berea, and, The Happy Dog in Gordon Square.

And, community leaders unveiled a design and broke ground for the long awaited African-American Culture Garden along Martin Luther King Blvd.
