The World of the Real/Surreal

We journey to a world of eerie landscapes, odd characters, and unbelievable architecture at the Akron Art Museum... and the exhibit "Real-Surreal" that explores the collision of ideas between artists from the Realist and Surrealist movements between the 1920's and the 1950's.

Most artists focus on one medium: sculpting, painting, music... you get the idea. But not Clevelander Tom Balbo. He's mastered three disciplines: print-making, ceramics and cast paper making - the art of making paper with a mold. The finished product is a sculpture or relief made from textured paper. Tom not only makes great art in his studio, he makes the paper too!

Like many, Mike Gustovich grew up reading comic books and dreaming about fighting evil and vanquishing villains. Well, for him, that dream came true. You see, Mike turned his childhood love of comic books and super heroes into a life-long career.

In our ongoing series Applause America, we bring you the story of an artist who has mastered the "recycle" riff. His name is Steve Cinnamon, and he’s creating music with an unusual instrument the guitar cigar box. It’s been around for about 150 years. He began making them at a time when he was gravely ill, depressed... and had nearly given up hope.Carter Foster, Real/Surreal exhibit at the Akron Art Museum
