Evicted: The Realities of Housing in Northeast Ohio

In the prologue to  Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, author Matthew Desmond points out how completely ordinary and common the eviction experience is in most cities across the nation. Though his PulitzerPrize winning book, is reported from Milwaukee, he writes, "...there is nothing special about Milwaukee when it comes to eviction. The numbers are similar in Kansas City, Cleveland, Chicago, and other cities. In 2013, one in eight poor renting families nationwide were unable to pay off all of their rent, and a similar number thought it was likely they would be evicted soon." But simply knowing that one in eight poor families might be on the verge of eviction doesn't paint the full picture ofwhatit happening in Northeast Ohio communities.

As citizens and neighbors from across the northeastOhiojoin together to read  Evicted as part of  One Community Reads, join us for a look inside the issues, the courts, the lived experience, and the solutions that might change the situation for our families and neighbors at the margins.
