Job Fair Aims To Help Transgender Ohioans Find Employment

A quarter of workers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender report experiencing discrimination in the workplace within the last five years. Research by the advocacy group Out and Equal finds that unemployment rates in the LGBT community are three times higher than in the general population. Transgender workers report particular bias, during the hiring process and on the job.

For the past four years, MetroHealth has tried to address change that dynamic by helping transgender job seekers connect with tolerant, potential employers. To learn more about the annual job fair and transgender employment issues, ideastream's Rick Jackson spoke with Lourdes Negron McDaniel, director of diversity and inclusion at MetroHealth, and Natalia Hodlik, a senior technology specialist at PNC. This year’s job fair begins at 9 a.m. Saturday on MetroHealth’s main Cleveland campus.
