World Homeless Day; Oscar Romero; Issue 1

Today, on World Homeless Day, we're reminded that an estimated 23,000 people in Cuyahoga County experience homelessness every year. 2,744 of those Cleveland Public Schools students. Officials say there has been a sharp increase in the number of homeless families in Northeast Ohio recently. What is being done in our community to help the most vulnerable? What works elsewhere? We'll talk to leaders of two organization that advocate for this population about what's being done, and needs to be done, to provide all with the basic necessity of a home.

Later, as martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador is set to be canonized, we'll learn more about the connection Cleveland has to that country and its violent history.

Finally, voters in November will decide State Issue 1 --a proposal to change the penalties for some drug-related crimes. We'll hear the case for and against, part of a spirited discussion at the City Club.

- Chris Knestrick, Executive Director, Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless
- Margaret Mitchell, President & CEO, YWCA of Greater Cleveland
