Crime Victims Want Voters To Protect Their Rights, And Studying Gov. Kasich's School Funding Formula

The fall ballot is starting to shape up, as a group that wants to put a proposed constitutional amendment to help crime victims before voters is forging ahead with its effort. A Republican lawmaker wants to change the eligibility rules for people who want to get scholarships from the state to send their kids to certain private schools – making those vouchers dependent only on family income and not whether the school their child attends is failing. But critics of Huffman’s plan worry that it would just give a state-funded boost for families who may already be sending their kids to private school.

Gov. John Kasich is doing a lot of traveling. He’s headed to Washington Friday – and among those he’ll meet with is President Donald Trump. Kasich was at the Munich Security Conference in Germany last weekend, and talked about his concerns about the repeal of the Affordable Care Act by Congressional Republicans and what it would do to Ohio and the 30 other states that expanded Medicaid. Office of Health Transformation Director Greg Moody says Medicaid expansion might change if the ACA is repealed and not replaced, but that the state is working to ensure that doesn't happen.

Gov. John Kasich's budget includes a $200 million dollar boost for the state’s 610 school districts. That's a 6.5% and a 7.6% increase over Kasich’s first budget in 2011. But at the same time, inflation has gone up nearly 11% since then.  And most of the state's school districts will have their funding cut under the Governor’s plan. Howard Fleeter of the Ohio Education Policy Institute crunches numbers from the state budget for the state’s major school business groups, and talks about how he views this school funding formula.
