ideastream reporting series tackles racial division in Northeast Ohio
Coming Nov. 15–21, ideastream examines the history of segregation in the greater Cleveland area
Nov. 9, 2017 (Cleveland) – With few exceptions, neighborhoods in the Cleveland metro area are largely white or largely black. This geographic segregation has serious ripple effects for Northeast Ohio communities, and it didn’t happen by chance, but rather by specific policies and events. ideastream is launching a week-long reporting series to explore the history and impact of greater Cleveland’s segregated neighborhoods.
A special series of research-driven reports will air over a five-day span on 90.3 WCPN and WVIZ/PBS. ideastream will also produce digital versions of each report and corresponding social media content using the hashtag #dividedbydesign.
What: Divided by Design reporting series
Where: Reports will air throughout the week on the following programs:
- Morning Edition weekdays 5–9 a.m. on 90.3
- The Sound of Ideas weekdays at 9 a.m. on 90.3
- Here & Now featuring The Sound of Applause weekdays 12–2 p.m. on 90.3
- All Things Considered weekdays 4–8 p.m. on 90.3
- Ideas weekdays at 7:30 p.m. on WVIZ/PBS
The reporting series will include one-on-one interviews, panel discussions with experts, radio and TV feature stories and engagement efforts on social media. Some topics and neighborhood spotlights include:
- Interactive timeline of key events shaping where people live in greater Cleveland
- The impact of freeway development on neighborhoods, including a look at the Clark Freeway project
- The history of Northeast Ohio’s segregated schools and the connection to today’s school choice movement
- How churches have approached racial tensions and the question of integrated congregations
- The cost of segregation
- The past and present use of “land contracts”
- The lingering effects of redlining to health outcomes today
Northeast Ohio residents can watch and listen to this series on air and online at ideastream.org/divided. Content will also be posted, shared and live-streamed on social media.
