The iOpener: Brown Says He Was Denied Visit to Migrant Children Detention

Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown says he was denied access to a migrant detention facility during a trip to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. He said he asked to tour one of the facilities housing minors but Customs and Border Protection would not let him, due, in part to it being a weekend. Brown said he was not satisfied with that explanation.

State lawmakers have yet to reach a deal on a budget for the next two-year cycle, with a deadline approaching this Wednesday. Talks between the two Republicans leading the negotiations, House Speaker Larry Householder and Senate President Larry Obhof, are being described by fellow lawmakers as positive. Sen. Dave Burke (R-Marysville) said the sticking points appear to be the business tax deduction, which Householder wanted to reduce, and income tax cuts, with Obhof wants to increase. The budget was due June 30th, but lawmakers failed to reach a compromise. They passed a temporary, 17-day extension of the current budget. It expires on July 17 th

Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s Ohio hometown of Wapakonetanow has two new statues of him and a new education center named after him, as it continues celebrating his moon mission 50 years ago this month. Gov. Mike DeWine and other officials took part in the unveiling of the statues and a ribbon-cutting at the Armstrong STEM Inspiration Center Sunday. 

Retief Goosen won the inaugural Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron with a two-under 68 for his first PGA Tour Champions victory. He finished two strokes ahead of Jay Haas and Tim Petrovic. The Senior Players Championship replaced the higher-profile and more popular World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational. 

Carlos Santana lifted the Indians to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins with a solo homer that broke a seventh inning tie. It was his 21st homer of the season. The Indians are trailing the A-L Central-leading Twins by 6.5 games.  The Tribe open a four-game series against the Tigers tonight.
