Wolfs Gallery, at the eastern end of the Larchmere Boulevard business district near Shaker Square, recently relocated to Beachwood. The new location opens Wednesday.

Known for its collection of Cleveland School artists, a close-knot community of artists who lived and worked in the region in the mid-20th century, along with centuries-old art, owner Michael Wolf and business partner Bridgett McWilliams moved Wolfs Gallery into the former transformer power station on Larchmere Boulevard in 2013.

Gallery owner Michael Wolf said the move to 23645 Mercantile Rd. in Beachwood is in response to limited space and reoccurring building problems.

“While the building was the most charming place, the place flooded constantly, the basement was a problem from the time we got there,” Wolf said.

The move severs Wolfs Gallery’s longtime connection to the Larchmere arts district. Wolfs Gallery first opened in 1978, at 13015 Larchmere Blvd., which currently houses Loganberry Books. In 1988, the firm moved to the Hat Factory on West 6th Street in the Warehouse District of Cleveland.

Wolfs Gallery’s new location in Beachwood is a 10,000 square-foot space with two amenities that Wolf deems essential for a gallery.

The new location has “plenty of wall space and not too much natural light,” Wolf said, adding that the space will allow them to exhibit more of their collection and provide more storage area.

The decision to relocate came at the end of March as Wolfs Gallery prepared to debut the work of Clarence Holbrook Carter (American, 1904-2000), well-known for his large architectural paintings and symbolic landscapes. The challenge of putting up the exhibit and ongoing problems with the former space prompted Wolf to move, stating that, “it’s been in the back of my mind for some time.”

The new space has gone through an extensive renovation including removing walls and installing new lighting.
