Buckeye Beat: Vinton County Grocery Store Opens in Food Desert

FARMER’S MARKETS ARE A GREAT WAY TO GET THE FRESHEST PRODUCE – BUT, EVEN IF A FARMER’S MARKET ISN’T AVAILABLE, YOU CAN ALWAYS MAKE A QUICK TRIP TO THE GROCERY STORE!

WELL, NOT ALWAYS…IN FACT, SOME PEOPLE LIVE IN AREAS THAT ARE REFERRED TO AS “FOOD DESERTS.” A FOOD DESSERT IS A REGION IN WHICH RESIDENTS DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO FRESH FRUIT, VEGETABLES, AND OTHER HEALTHY FOOD – THEY CAN BE IN BIG CITIES, OR IN RURAL TOWNS.

HERE IN OHIO, ONE WELL-KNOWN FOOD DESERT IS VINTON COUNTY, WHERE SOME RESIDENTS HAVE TO DRIVE MORE THAN AN HOUR TO BUY FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. BUT, SOON, THAT WILL CHANGE! MARISA OBERLE, FROM OUR PARTNERS AT WOUB, HAS MORE IN THIS WEEK’S BUCKEYE BEAT.
