NewsDepth 2021-2022 | Episode 20

In this week's episode, we travel to Ukraine, where its neighbor, Russia, launched a full invasion last week. We give some historical context for the attack and explain the U.S. response.

Next, we meet President Biden’s new Supreme Court nominee, and she’s one for the history books. That got us thinking: If you were president, what qualities would you look for in a Supreme Court justice?

Then, NewsCat cuts in – with a story that’s for the birds! A Cuyahoga Falls bird enthusiast set up a webcam in his backyard that streams 24/7 to birdwatchers around the world. And NewsCat introduces a fun, bird-themed poll question.

Finally, we meet some newly endangered animals: the koala and the gray wolf – and head to South Africa, where conservationists are trying to save the white rhino from the brink of extinction.

Economic Sanction (noun): A penalty applied by one country on another, related to the economy.

Public Defender (noun): A kind of lawyer that represents people accused of a crime when they cannot afford a private lawyer.

Endangered (adjective): An animal is seriously at risk of extinction.

Nocturnal (adjective): When something is usually active at night.

Poaching (verb): The illegal hunting of a protected animal.
