WCLV Program Guide 04-28-2019

April 28

1865 premiere of Giacomo Meyerbeer's final opera L'Africaine (The African Woman) at the Paris Opéra in the Salle Le Peletier; concerns fictitious events in the life of explorer Vasco da Gama.

1892 first performance of Dvorák’s In Nature's Realm Op 91 in Prague; the first of a trilogy of overtures called ‘Nature, Life and Love’; the other two parts are Carnival Op 92 (‘Life’) and Othello Op 93 (‘Love’).

1892 premiere of the Sibelius symphonic poem/oratorio Kullervo for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, in Helsinki, with the composer conducting; based on the character of Kullervo in the epic poem Kalevala, using texts from that poem.

1937 Louisville Orchestra founded by Robert Whitney (1904–1986) and Charles Farnsley, Mayor of Louisville; resident group for the Louisville Ballet and the Kentucky Opera, and presents concerts across the Kentucky/Indiana area.

1938 first performance of David Diamond’s Elegy in Memory of Maurice Ravel in Rochester, N.Y., conducted by Howard Hanson (who was rather dismayed by the 22-year-old composer’s modernist score).

1943 Sir Jeffrey Tate – English conductor (died 2 June 2017); he gave up a career as a doctor to study music; he was president of UK Spina Bifida charity ASBAH since 1989. Much of his career was spent in the opera house.  He also recorded all of Mozart’s piano concertos with Mitsuko Uchida.

1948 premiere of Stravinsky’s ballet Orpheus by the Ballet Society in New York City with choreographer George Balanchine; led directly to the founding of what is now New York City Ballet.

1954 Michael Daugherty – American composer, pianist, and teacher (65 years old); one of the most colorful and widely performed American concert music composers of his generation.
