May 15

1567 Claudio Monteverdi baptized – Italian composer, gambist, singer and Roman Catholic priest (d.1643); wrote one of the earliest operas, L'Orfeo (1607); recognized as an innovative composer and enjoyed considerable fame in his lifetime.

1808 Michael Balfe – Irish composer (d.1870); best remembered for his opera The Bohemian Girl (1843).

1908 Lars-Erik Larsson – Swedish composer and music professor (d.1986); his style was eclectic, from late Romantic to serialism.

1913 first performance of Debussy’s ballet Jeux (Games), at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées by the Ballet Russes, Pierre Monteux conducting; not well received and soon eclipsed by Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, premiered two weeks later by the same company.

1920 premiere of Igor Stravinsky's Pulcinella at the Paris Opera under the baton of Ernest Ansermet; dancer Léonide Massine created both the libretto and choreography, Pablo Picasso designed the original costumes and sets; commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes.

1941 Richard Wilson – Cleveland-born composer and pianist (78 years old); at a young age drawn to the concerts of George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra; composer-in-residence with the American Symphony.
