WCLV Program Guide 07-22-2020

July 22

1822 Luigi Arditi – Italian violinist, composer and conductor (d.1903); wrote operas and numerous songs and vocal waltzes, the most popular of which is Il Bacio (The Kiss).

1844 first performance of Richard Wagner’s A Faust Overture in Dresden conducted by the composer; intended as the first movement of a Faust Symphony that Wagner never got around to completing.

1919 premiere of Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat in London by the Ballets Russes; sets and costumes were by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine; Sergei Diaghilev asked Falla to conduct the premiere but the composer felt he was not experienced enough to conduct a work so complex, and he handed the baton to Ernest Ansermet after one rehearsal.

1960 Sergei Edelmann – Russian-born American pianist (60 years old); has appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra
